WHEELER WINSTON-DIXON
Wheeler Winston-Dixon is an american filmaker and horror theorist. He has published multiple theories in magazines such as film quarterly and post script. His most notable horror theory is the 'site of activity' theory. His 'site of activity' theory states that we rarely get to know any character in horror, as they are killed off to quickly. This means we never have the chance to get to know the character, and can emotionally detach ourselves from them. This means that the character is not viewed as a character, and is merely a 'site of activity', the activity in question often being their brutal death. NE

In this example, from Wes Craven's 'Scream' (1996) we can meet the character of 'casey' for five minutes before she is brutally murdered. This means that casey is a 'site of activity' and we never get to know the character. This is a useful theory to use in our opening sequence, as our two central characters steve and Chloe are both going to be 'sites of activity' and we are never going to get to know their characters, and our going to make our judgements on them from the mise-en-scene in our sequence.
